How To Make Gorgeous Gift Baskets
Giving gift baskets is all the rage. You can give them for all occasions. From birthdays to holidays.
Gift baskets make great wedding gifts. Any hostess would be glad to recieve one.
Everyone likes them too. From the very young to the elderly.
So you're probably saying, "Enough already! How do you make one?".
Well, hold your horses. I'm going to explain.
Here is a list of the supplies you will need.
- A basket(duh)
- Tulle
- Newspaper
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Gifts to put in it
- Grass(the kind you use at Easter, not the kind in your front yard)
- Accesories(flowers, pearl garlands, butterflies, and anything else we can come up with to doll it up)
Choosing the Basket
The size of the basket doesn't matter. The shape does. Find a basket with a handle on it. I like to wrap my baskets in tulle and it needs a handle to support it.
Choosing Items to Put in the Basket
Keep with a theme. If it's for a wedding, then go all white, or with the wedding colors. If it's for a hostess gift, then what is her house decorated in? Does she go crazy over grapes? Then there is your theme. And that's a great one.
Is it a Mother's Day gift? Do a theme of roses. That's my personal favorite. Any theme will work. Just carry it through.
Purchase taller things to go in the back. Medium things to go in the middle, and smaller things to go in the front.
Building the Basket
Place your basket on a table. It's easier to see what you're doing that way. Fill the basket with wadded up newspaper. The kind with no ink on it is great if your can find it.
Fill it to the top of the basket. Spread grass over the paper. Start in the back with your taller items. Sometimes you have to move the paper around to fit things in. You want everything to be very snug.
Continue to fill in the basket. In the front you want smaller things. If the basket is a grape theme, you could have plastic grapes spilling over the edge.
Then I accesorize the inside. I put flowers, pearls hanging over the edge, doilies, anything that matches your theme.
Even if it's for a guy you can fill the gaps with ivy or some other fake greenery. Have it hanging down the side as well.
Wrapping the Basket
I am a huge fan of wrapping gift baskets with tulle. It's so much better than plastic.
Lay out your tulle on the floor. You can use any color you want. White and cream are a sure bet, but don't be afraid to use color. Place the basket on the tulle and gather it up and around, smoothing as you go.
Pull it up to the top. You'll want some sticking up at the top. Secure with your bow you have made(instructions below). Trim the top with scissors. If it's a big basket it should be about 9 or 10 inches. It just depends on the size of the basket.
You can hot glue butterflies, flowers,or ribbon bows randomly on the outside if your want. Remember to keep with your theme.
Making the Bow
I like wide wired ribbon for gift baskets. It looks better and keeps it's shape. If the ribbon only has a print on one side, then this is how you make the bow. Leave about a 10 inch tail. Twist ribbon in your hand and make a 5 inch loop. Twist ribbon and make a loop on the other side. Do a smaller loop on each side.
Don't forget to twist the ribbon each time. This keeps the pattern on the outside. You can make a little loop in the middle to finish it off. Cut another piece of ribbon about 2 ft long. Tie your ribbon together with that.
Cut all your end in a dove tail. Fold the ribbon end in half. Cut in a diagonal so that the points are on the outsides.
This is what you will secure your tulle with. Tie the bow on the basket.
You can further embellish your bow with a flower if you would like. Just hot glue in the center of the bow.
I also like to hang something else with the bow. If it's a baby basket, you could hang a pacifier. I found some adorable hard plastic ones at Hobby Lobby. A Christmas basket looks cute with an ornament.
I also like to do a tag. Purchase tags at a craft store. Place stickers on it that go with your theme and write to: and from: on the back. Attach it to the bow with small ribbon before you put on basket.
I make sure the bow, accessory, and the tag are all together. That way when they take the bow off, it's all together.
So happy basket making. I know you can do it. Cause a stir at all the parties you attend when you enter with your fabulous gift baskets you've created.
