Retirement Party Themes and Ideas

luau party

A Retirement Party is all about honoring the Retiree. You need to decide first of all, where you are going to have the party. You can have it at a restaurant, your home, the office, or a park.

Next, you need to decide on a theme. What does the Retiree like to do? Golf, fish, hunt, shop, sew, ect... You could also pick a theme about what they want to do. Travel, gamble, ect... The list is endless.

Themes

Casino

Set up a tables with casino games. Have a bar set up with pretty girls serving drinks.

Cruise Ship

Set the scene for a cruise. Decorate with cruise ship decor. Have different areas just like you would find on a cruise ship. You'll want a bar area. A casino area. And a lounge area with music playing.

Fiesta

Create a beautiful fiesta party with bright colors, sombreros, and chili peppers.

Golf

Use golf related decor.

Hollywood Party

Make the guest of honor feel extra special with this theme.

Tropical Paradise

Set a tropical scene with palm trees, ferns, tiki torches, pink flamingos, and tropical fruit.

Decorating Ideas For All Themes

Place a large picture of the guest of honor on an easel. Have a book for guests to sign in.

Cover one wall with paper. Let the guests write poems, memories, or sayings on it.

Frame pictures of the Retiree. Place them on the table. Keep the frames in your theme.

Have an area set up for photos. Do a balloon arch or hang silky fabric. Take photos of the guest of honor and each guest.

Place memorabilia from the Retirees years at work on tables.

Set up a "retirement" scene. A hammock, a side table with magazines and fresh lemonade, a pillow, a newspaper, and a radio.

You can purchase sample sizes of "old people" creams and denture cleaners. Place them randomly or make a basket.

Borrow a wheel chair, a walker, a cane, and take pictures of the Retiree in it.

Activities

Hold a Roast

Let the guests poke fun at the guest of honor. Keep it funny and not mean-spirited.

Video of Memories

Have a special spot for guests to record memories. Set up a video camera in a corner.

This is Your Life

Show a slide show of the Retiree's life in the work force. Bring in people from the past to surprise the guest of honor.

What Will (name of retiree) Do Now That They Are Retired?

Have all the guests write down what they think the retiree will do now. Read each one aloud.

Food and Drinks

You can just have cake (go with your theme) or you can serve food. Here are a few ideas.

Food

  • Build your own taco bar
  • Chicken wings
  • Assortment of sandwiches on mini buns
  • Meatballs
  • Mini pizzas
  • Veggie and fruit trays

Drinks

  • Punch
  • Fresh squeezed lemonade
  • Fruit juice with sparkling water

Favors

You don't have to give favors at a retirement party, but it's a nice gesture. Everyone likes to receive gifts, no matter how small. Here's some ideas...

Small picture frames with a picture of retiree.

Mini address books with the address of the retiree already recorded. This is so everyone can keep in touch.

Small scrapbooks with memorabilia of working years.
