Toddler Birthday Party Ideas ~ 2 and 3 Year Old Birthday Parties

Toddler birthday party ideas for 2 or 3 year old little ones. Don't be stressed out planning your toddler's birthday. With these fun ideas you'll be sure to have a cool party that will satisfy your little one to a tee.

You'll find basic planning ideas, what theme is best, where to have the party, and much more.

Toddler Birthday Party Basics

Toddler parties are a little different than older kid parties in the fact that you are dealing with short attention spans. There are a few basic guidelines to help you achieve the perfect party without going absolutely crazy in the process.

  • Keep the guest list to 2 or 3 tots and be sure and request the parents to stay
  • The party should be no longer than 2 hours (an hour is plenty long)
  • Games should be simple and everyone should win a prize every time (save yourself from the 2 year old tantrums)
  • Don't serve a lot of sugary treats (unless you enjoy tiny ones swinging from the chandelier)
  • Work around your child's nap time (a cranky toddler is not in the mood to party)
  • And most of all, just have fun

Below you'll find more ideas and suggestions for each area of party planning. But just remember that these are only suggestions. You know your child best.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Location of Party

Where you decide to have the party is completely up to you, but I really would suggest to simply have the party at home. Or somewhere you child is completely comfortable (like Grandma's house or a favorite park).

Toddler's don't like new places and will be overwhelmed and not in a festive mood if thrown into a new environment.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Invitations

Invitations can range from homemade to ready made. It all depends on if your toddler wants to be involved. Go along with your theme to keep everything cohesive.

Send out your invites around 3 to 4 weeks in advance. Any longer than that and your guests are likely to forget. Any shorter than that and they probably will already have plans. You can also hand deliver your invites. Either way is fine.

Toddler Birthday Party Themes

The perfect way to decide on a theme is to do something that your little one loves. A favorite cartoon, book, shape, color, object, ect.

For example if he likes trucks, then have a truck party. If she is in love with Elmo, then there you go....a perfect theme.

Some favorite themes for this age group are...

  • Abby Cadabby
  • ABC's
  • Baby Einstein
  • Backyardigans
  • Balloons
  • Barney
  • Blue's Clues
  • Bubbles
  • Bugs
  • Butterflies
  • Candy Land
  • Care Bears
  • Cars
  • Cowboys
  • Cupcake
  • Dora
  • Elmo
  • Fairy
  • Fancy Nancy
  • Farm Animals
  • Fire Truck
  • Jungle
  • Lady Bug
  • Prince
  • Princess
  • Rainbow
  • Rubber Duck
  • Sesame Street
  • Shapes
  • Teddy Bear
  • The Wiggles
  • Thomas The Train
  • Winnie The Pooh

Some of these themes and more are on our Kid Birthday Party Page Ideas. Just tweek the ideas to fit your child's age.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Decorations

Children of 2 and 3 can really appreciate a well decorated party. The only difference is they really don't care how much you've spent. Paper chains and colorful balloons will excite them as much as a costly flower arrangement.

Decorate with your child in mind, not the adults of the party. Although you can please both. Traditional party supplies are a great way to start if you're not sure what to do. Then add your own flare. You'll find so many ideas for decorating for a party right here on this site.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Supplies

After you have decided on a theme, then you need to find supplies to match your given theme. If your child is turning two, you'll find all the supplies and ideas you'll need on our 2nd Birthday Page.

Finding good party supplies is as easy as 1-2-3 when you know where to look. Your local party supplier may have the theme you are looking for. Or try any department store for generic supplies. For more specific supplies shopping on line is the way to go.

One of the best places for one of a kind party supplies is Celebrate Express . Check out a few examples of what they offer below. You're sure to find anything you are looking for.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Games

Games for this age should be non-competitive. Toddlers love to count, imitate, and dance around, so incorporate these things in your toddler party games and you're sure to succeed.

Visit our Toddler Birthday Party Games page for more details.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Food

As with everything else for toddler parties, keep the food simple. No need to serve 50 different things. Just a few things will be fine. Since the party is only an hour or two long you could even get away with serving cake and a drink.

If you want to serve other foods, make sure everything is age appropriate. Kids are really picky at this stage, so choose foods that the kids are familiar with. Some foods that are guaranteed to be eaten without a fuss are...

  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
  • Fruit
  • Crackers and Cheese
  • Cookies
  • Pizza
  • Animal crackers
  • Pigs in a blanket (croissants wrapped around lil' smokies)
  • Jello
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Macaroni and cheese

You can serve foods that go along with your theme as well. Goldfish crackers at an Elmo party, animal crackers at a jungle party, ect. Cut the sandwiches with cookie cutters for some added fun.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Cakes

Cakes for toddlers are really no different than any other age. Just follow your theme and either purchase a cake from a bakery or decorate the cake yourself. You can even have your child help with the decorating.

Cupcakes are a great choice for this age group as well. Easier to handle for little hands. You can add little toppers or cupcake picks, but be sure and remove before giving to the kids.

Toddler Birthday Party Ideas For Favors

Keep in mind the age of your guest when deciding on favors. If your guests are under the age of 3, then make sure the toys or candy is age appropriate. It's always nice to talk with the parents of the kids before handing out the treats. You wouldn't want little Sally to get candy if the parent doesn't allow her to have it.
